Picked up a new Ranger RT188

love the center console setup for crabbing, but haven't had it on the water yet but I'm already running into trailer issues though. It's a dual axle with brakes, and they lock up in reverse unless I stick the key in the tongue. I'm towing with a '16 silverado, and from what I've read, the reverse lights should trigger a solenoid to release the brakes. Some buddies say it's normal to use the key every time, but that sounds nuts to me.
Anyone know if this trailer should back up automatically with the reverse light signal, or am I stuck doing the key dance forever?

You've hit the nail on the head. The truck's brake controller doesn't come into play here because we're dealing with surge brakes. It should back up just fine in most spots, but on inclines or during quick stops, that surge might push the coupler in and activate the brakes. Have someone put it in reverse while you listen for that subtle solenoid click at the tongue,if you don't hear a click, there's no power. By the way, I've also used a nickel when needed, and it does the trick perfectly

You're right, James. Anyway most modern trailers with surge breaks should automatically release when reversing. Do check if the solenoid is bad, too.
